The name “1256” is not random. On a single day in 1921, 1,256 homes in Tulsa’s Greenwood District were destroyed. Greenwood was one of the most prosperous Black communities in the country at the time, known widely as Black Wall Street. What was built there over generations was dismantled in hours.

1256 Movement exists to respond to that moment, not with anger, but with action. Their mission is straightforward: restore and rebuild 1,256 homes for families in north Tulsa, one for every home that was lost. Grants of up to $10,000 go directly to families for critical repairs, roof replacements, bathroom renovations, and new construction. Real homes. Real families. Real generational wealth rebuilt from the ground up.

Since launching in 2021, 1256 Movement has raised over $200,000 and completed improvements for 30 families, with more than 200 additional families in the pipeline. Their work has been featured on OWN’s docuseries “Rebuilding Black Wall Street,” bringing national attention to a story that is still unfolding right here in Tulsa.
