It Started With One High School Girl
Girl Talk began in 2002 when one high school girl identified a problem and decided to make a difference. Haley Kilpatrick founded the first Girl Talk Club in Albany, Georgia, to help her younger sister through the challenging years of middle school.
She did not wait for an organization to solve the problem. She became the solution.
That founding instinct is still the engine of everything Girl Talk does today. Not adults handing down wisdom to girls. Girls showing up for girls. Older mentoring younger. Peer to peer. The way the most powerful relationships in a young person’s life actually work.
Last year, they proudly served 3,595 girls nationwide across their peer-led mentorship programs.
The Problem Is Real and It Is Growing
The numbers are hard to read. They are also impossible to ignore.
79% of school-aged girls today say they feel like they are going to explode because they are under so much pressure. 60% of girls report feelings of extreme sadness and hopelessness. 67% of girls believe they are in competition with other girls. 57% of girls say social media makes them want to change how they look.
These are not statistics about a small group of struggling teenagers. They describe the daily experience of a generation of girls trying to figure out who they are while every force around them tells them they are not enough.
Traditional youth programs have not been able to solve this. Many are adult-led. Episodic. Inaccessible. They miss the very thing a girl in middle school needs most. Their transformative impact speaks volumes. For example, 96% of Girl Talk Camp Counselors grew in their ability to lead others, and 100% of Girl Talk Club Leaders felt that Clubs supported and improved their mental health and wellbeing (2025 Girl Talk Programming Surveys).
Students who meet regularly with their mentors are 52% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school and 37% less likely to skip a class.
